Complete Eye Care for Kids

From First Visits to Teen Years

From your baby’s first eye exam to teenage vision changes, we’re here for every stage.

We know eye exams can feel intimidating — especially for little ones.

That’s why we keep everything gentle, relaxed, and adapted to your child

Eye Exams Designed Just for Kids

We create a calm, child-friendly experience so your child feels comfortable from start to finish.

Our exams check:

  • How well your child sees
  • Eye coordination and focusing
  • Overall eye health and development

We use play based techniques so it feels engaging, not overwhelming.

If Your Child Keeps Needing Stronger Glasses

If your child s prescription seems to change every year, you re not alone and there are ways to slow it down.

We track how your child s eyes are growing and step in early to help reduce how quickly their vision changes.

This helps protect their long-term eye health and can make a big difference as they grow.

Growing Eyes Change Quickly — We Help You Stay Ahead

Childrens vision can change fast, often without obvious signs.

That s why we focus on:

  • Tracking eye growth over time
  • Monitoring prescription changes
  • Catching issues before they affect school or daily life

Think of it as ongoing support not just a one time check

Eye Exams for Babies &

Toddlers

Eye exams can start as early as 6 months old.

Even if your child can t talk or read yet, we can still check their vision using lights, movement, and simple visual tools.

Early check-ups help catch issues that could affect development later on.

Children’s Eye Exams

Annual childrens eye exams are covered by OHIP, making early and preventative pediatric eye care accessible for Oshawa families.

Why Early and Ongoing Exams Matter

Growing Eyes Need Proactive Care

Children’s vision develops rapidly — and issues often appear

without obvious signs.

Early Checks Make a Big Difference

The earlier we catch a concern, the easier it is to manage and correct.

Small Issues Aren’t Always Obvious

Kids don t always know when something is wrong with their vision. They may think everyone sees the way they do.

Support for Learning and Development

Clear vision plays a big role in reading, focus, and confidence both in school and everyday life

  • What is the difference between a pediatric optometrist and pediatric ophthalmologist?

An optometrist provides comprehensive eye exams, prescribes glasses or contact lenses, and monitors vision development in children. A pediatric ophthalmologist is a medical doctor who specializes in diagnosing and managing more complex medical or surgical eye

    Conditions.

At Red House Vision Centre in Oshawa, our optometry team works closely with our

pediatric ophthalmology services to ensure coordinated, comprehensive care for your Child.

  • What happens during a pediatric eye exam?

During the exam, we review your child’s health and vision history, check visual acuity and focusing, evaluate overall eye health, and provide personalized recommendations,

including glasses or treatment if needed.

  • At what age should my child see an optometrist?

The Canadian Association of Optometrists recommends that children have their first

comprehensive eye exam between 6 and 9 months of age. Early eye exams help detect vision or eye health concerns before they affect development. After the first visit, regular eye exams throughout childhood support healthy visual growth and learning.

  • Are kids eye exams covered by OHIP?

Yes. Children and youth under 20 in Ontario can receive annual eye exams at no cost through OHIP. This includes full exams and follow-up visits if eye concerns arise. Coverage applies to exams by optometrists and pediatric eye doctors. Eyeglasses, contact lenses, and most advanced tests are not covered.

  • Can infants really have an eye exam?

Yes. Infants as young as 6 months can be tested using non-verbal assessment methods. Early detection of vision problems can prevent developmental issues and ensure healthy visual growth.
