What is the difference between a pediatric optometrist and pediatric ophthalmologist?
An optometrist provides comprehensive eye exams, prescribes glasses or contact lenses, and monitors vision development in children. A pediatric ophthalmologist is a medical doctor who specializes in diagnosing and managing more complex medical or surgical eye
Conditions.
At Red House Vision Centre in Oshawa, our optometry team works closely with our
pediatric ophthalmology services to ensure coordinated, comprehensive care for your Child.
What happens during a pediatric eye exam?
During the exam, we review your child’s health and vision history, check visual acuity and focusing, evaluate overall eye health, and provide personalized recommendations,
including glasses or treatment if needed.
At what age should my child see an optometrist?
The Canadian Association of Optometrists recommends that children have their first
comprehensive eye exam between 6 and 9 months of age. Early eye exams help detect vision or eye health concerns before they affect development. After the first visit, regular eye exams throughout childhood support healthy visual growth and learning.
Are kids eye exams covered by OHIP?
Yes. Children and youth under 20 in Ontario can receive annual eye exams at no cost through OHIP. This includes full exams and follow-up visits if eye concerns arise. Coverage applies to exams by optometrists and pediatric eye doctors. Eyeglasses, contact lenses, and most advanced tests are not covered.
Can infants really have an eye exam?
Yes. Infants as young as 6 months can be tested using non-verbal assessment methods. Early detection of vision problems can prevent developmental issues and ensure healthy visual growth.
